Select Variant visibility from the list of settings.
Variant visibility sits under General settings.
The two options
- Hide out-of-stock variants. Out-of-stock variants don’t appear in the selector at all.
- Show out-of-stock variants with an “Out of stock” label. Variants still appear in the selector, but are marked as unavailable. This is the default.
Where it applies
The setting takes effect anywhere a variant selector is shown to the customer. That’s the Add product, Replace product, and Change variant modules. Any future module that surfaces variants inherits the same behavior. There’s no per-module override, so your choice here covers all of them. What counts as out of stock
A variant counts as out of stock when its Shopify inventory is at zero and the product’s “Continue selling when out of stock” setting is off.If “Continue selling when out of stock” is on, Shopify treats the variant as buyable, so Recheck shows it normally and doesn’t flag it as out of stock.
Editing the label text
The “Out of stock” label is customer-facing copy. Like your other customer-facing text, you can edit its wording in Translations.Need help?
