# Checkout upsell

> Offer extra products on the Shopify checkout page, before the customer pays.

A Checkout upsell shows extra product offers on Shopify's checkout page, before the customer pays. If the customer accepts, the product goes straight into their cart and they pay for it in the same checkout. The order doesn't exist yet, so nothing is edited afterwards.

Use this if you want to suggest an add-on, like a care kit or a matching accessory, while the customer still has their card out. For offers shown after the order is placed, see the [Thank you page upsell](/features/upsells/thank-you-page-upsell).

<Note>
  Upsells need the Growth plan or higher (see [Plans and billing](/features/billing)), and checkout upsells also need Shopify Plus. The Upsells page marks the type **Shopify Plus only**. On other plans, Recheck shows the banner "Checkout upsells require Shopify Plus" with the message "Shopify only allows apps to add content to the checkout page on Shopify Plus stores. Your checkout upsells won't show to customers until you upgrade to Shopify Plus."
</Note>

## How to create an offer

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Recheck and click Upsells in the left menu.">
    You'll see a card for each upsell type. Pick **Checkout upsell**. If you haven't made one yet, you'll see "No checkout upsells yet".
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Create upsell.">
    The new offer starts as **Inactive**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set an internal name for the offer.">
    This is for your reference only and isn't shown to customers.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose your conditions.">
    Under **Display Mode**, pick **Show for all carts**, or **Show when conditions are met** and click **Add Rule**. You can add single rules or groups of rules. Each rule checks one of these: **Product**, **Collection**, **Product Tag**, **Order Value**, or **Customer Tag**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the products to offer.">
    Pick products manually, up to 3 per offer, or use automatic recommendations. Both options are covered below.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Flip the toggle at the top of the page to take the offer live.">
    Leave it off if you want to stage the offer without showing it to customers yet.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the offer." />

  <Step title="Style the offer with Customize appearance.">
    Finish the name, products, and conditions before you open it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the Recheck Checkout Upsell block to your checkout page.">
    The offer only shows where you place its block. See [Add the block to your checkout](#add-the-block-to-your-checkout) below.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Checkout offers have no discount step. Products are added to the cart at their regular price.

## Choosing products

**Manual selection** lets you pick up to 3 products. Every customer who sees the offer gets the same products.

By default, the offer leaves out products that are already in the cart. Tick **Show products even if one of the offer products is already in the cart** to show them anyway.

**Automatic recommendations** come from Shopify's Search & Discovery app. Complementary products show first, and related products fill any remaining spots. You set up complementary products in the Search & Discovery app.

## Customize appearance

**Customize appearance** lets you style the offer next to a checkout page preview. The controls come in four groups:

* **Content:** the title, subtitle, and their alignment.
* **Appearance:** the offer layout (Vertical, Horizontal, Carousel, or Single product), the **Accept button text**, and a confirmation message shown once the product is in the cart. Use `{price}` in the button text to show the total price.
* **Behavior:** how many products show at once, and whether customers get a variant picker and a quantity picker. Without the variant picker, the first available variant is added. Without the quantity picker, each tap adds one unit.
* **Pricing:** whether to show a product's compare-at price as a strikethrough, and its savings percent.

The checkout is narrow, so Single product and Carousel keep the offer compact. The preview is approximate. Where the offer sits in checkout is set in Shopify's checkout editor, not here.

## Add the block to your checkout

<Steps>
  <Step title="In your Shopify admin, click Settings, then Checkout." />

  <Step title="Click Customize on your active checkout configuration.">
    The checkout editor opens on the **Checkout** page. Stay on that page. This block doesn't go on the Thank you or Order status pages.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Add block and choose Recheck Checkout Upsell.">
    Place it where you want the offer to show, then click **Save**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If you have more than one checkout configuration, add the block to each one. For the other Recheck blocks, see [how to add Recheck extensions](/getting-started/how-to-add-recheck-extensions).
