# Variant visibility

> Choose how out-of-stock variants show up in Recheck's customer-facing variant selector.

When a customer edits their order, Recheck shows a variant selector wherever they pick a different option. This setting controls how that selector handles out-of-stock variants. It's a customer experience choice, so pick what fits your brand.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Recheck and click on Settings in the left menu." />

  <Step title="Select Variant visibility from the list of settings.">
    Variant visibility sits under General settings.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose how out-of-stock variants appear.">
    Pick one of the two options below. The setting applies everywhere a variant selector is shown, with no per-module override.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The two options

* **Hide out-of-stock variants.** Out-of-stock variants don't appear in the selector at all.
* **Show out-of-stock variants with an "Out of stock" label.** Variants still appear in the selector, but are marked as unavailable. This is the default.

The default avoids confusion, especially on size selectors like S / M / L / XL, where a missing size can read like a bug. The label tells the customer exactly what's going on. The hide option suits brands that want a cleaner selector and are fine with a customer wondering why a variant they saw earlier is now gone.

## Where it applies

The setting takes effect anywhere a variant selector is shown to the customer. That's the [Add product](/features/modules/add-product), [Replace product](/features/modules/replace-product), and [Change variant](/features/modules/change-variant) modules. Any future module that surfaces variants inherits the same behavior. There's no per-module override, so your choice here covers all of them.

## What counts as out of stock

A variant counts as out of stock when its Shopify inventory is at zero **and** the product's "Continue selling when out of stock" setting is off.

<Note>
  If "Continue selling when out of stock" is on, Shopify treats the variant as buyable, so Recheck shows it normally and doesn't flag it as out of stock.
</Note>

## Editing the label text

The "Out of stock" label is customer-facing copy. Like your other customer-facing text, you can edit its wording in [Translations](/features/settings/translations).
